Blue Flags

Nine beaches of Tenerife obtain the distinction of blue flag

It is an environmental certification system that rewards the good management of the coastline of
some municipalities of Spain

The Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) has distinguished nine
Tenerife locations with the blue flag. Arona and Puerto de la Cruz at the head of the
municipalities of the Island, two each. Distinctions recognize the environmental management carried out
by the municipalities and Spanish ports in the maintenance of their beaches, ports and
boats

The coastal locations of the Island on which the blue flag will fly during this year
will be: El Socorro (Los Realejos), Playa Jardín and San Telmo (Puerto de la Cruz), La Arena-Mesa
del Mar (Tacoronte), Pools of Bajamar (La Laguna), El Camisón and Las Vistas (Arona), La
Jaquita (Guía de Isora) and Playa de la Arena (Santiago del Teide).

The Blue Flag program, which has more than 30 years of history, is not only the
accreditation of good environmental management, but it is also used as a strategy of
marketing for social awareness. Spanish municipalities and ports have presented their
candidacy on a voluntary basis and have been evaluated by a national jury in which
representatives of the coastal autonomous communities, representatives of the
Ministries and experts from universities and other organizations.

The distinctions for the winners also imply an international reach, since they are
ratified in a jury composed, among others, by the World Tourism Organization
(UNWTO) or the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). New beaches in Tenerife obtain the distinction of blue flag.
