Tenerife boasts a cultural heritage on par with its natural beauty which, in combination, create the complete vacation destination. Among the highlights in its cities and towns: La Laguna, Tenerife's old capital with a feel similar to that of Old San Juan, is a Unesco World Heritage Site with fine churches, convents, and public and private buildings dating from the 16th to the 18th century; Garachico is a port town known for its natural lava pools, streets, and Spanish colonial architecture; La Orotava, distinguished by its architecture and traditional Canarian atmosphere, is an acknowledged Historical Artistic Site, with wine shops and manor houses; Icod de los Vinos is home to the 1,000 year-old drago tree, banana plantations, and a volcanic lava tube.

These and many other examples perfectly illustrate the Canary Islands' rich architectural traditions, where the typical wooden balconies - usually made of pitch pine - stand out for their intricately beautiful carvings.
