Protected mountain draws interest from Italy

The natural monument of the Montaña Pelada in Granadilla de Abona has attracted the interest of an Italian geopark. The fifth El Medano scientific forum included a guided tour of this natural attraction which could become the focus of a new environmental tourist attraction. Representative of the Italian geopark, through UNESCO, Fabrizio Santini took part in the tour and expressed interest at the plans.

Councillor for culture, Óscar Delgado Melo said: “The objective of the activity is to show interest in the protected space of Montaña Pelada for conducting informative and scientific activities as well as the organisation of possible georoutes and empowerment of geological tourism.”

The Pelada Mountain is a natural monument that emerged from under the sea, an aspect that arouses an important geological interest by scholars in the field. It is an area of 152.7 hectares of great geological interest, consisting of a boiler explosion that was created when magma made contact with surface seawater. Another attraction is the presence of a fossil dune along the beach.
